World Events -Tsunami

October 11th, 2006 by jessc in Uncategorized · No Comments

The Boxing Day Tsunami was a world event that had affected many. The giant earthquake  erupted in the Indian Ocean created a massive tidal wave reaching 30 feet and swept through the coasts of South and South-East Asia taking away lives which belonged to many innocent people on the 26th of December. The tsunami scored a 9.0 on the richter scale making it the second largest earthquake to have erupted. The tidal waves which were triggered by the giant earthquake travelled at a speed of 500miles per hour.

The tsunami had affected many countries including: Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, Thailand, Myanmar, Malaysia, Bangaladesh, Somalia, Seychelles Kenya, Madagascar, Tanzania, La Reunion and Mauritius.

I see the tsunami as a terrible, frightening and sad event which had to happen on a day which was for celebration; Boxing Day. As soon as I had heard about the tsunami I felt really sorry for all the people who were involved in the event.

Mantainee and Art Exhibit

September 13th, 2006 by jessc in Uncategorized · No Comments

Wenesday the 26th of July was Carlingford High School’s Mantinee and Art Exhibit Night. Years 7,8 and 9 were invited to attend the reheasal.

All the items were performed by seniors and a couple of them were performed by seniors with the help of younger years. Every now and then the audience would crack up laughing because of the funny interpretations of the dances and dramas and sometimes the audience stayed silent in suspence.

Although most of the drama items that were performed were very funny some were quite hard to follow the storyline….Overall the performance was very entertaining.

International Day!

August 13th, 2006 by jessc in Uncategorized · No Comments

The 19th of July was Carlingford High School’s International Day. This was a day where people from differenet cultures came together to celebrate their unity.

The first two periods was like any other school day, apart for the people who were helping to set up the food stalls and who were preparing for the concert which was happening straight after recess.

In the concert there were many great performances, this included; songs, plays, dances, musical items and a few fashion parades.

As soon as the concert was over everyone was allowed to wander around and buy different foods from the different food stalls.

Carlingford High School’s International Day was a great day to try different foods from different cultures. International Day was a great success.

‘Corpse Bride’

August 12th, 2006 by jessc in Uncategorized · No Comments

“Corspe Bride” by Tim Burton is a claymation animation film about a boy named Victor Van Dort.

Victor is a shy character who has an arranged marriage to Victoria Everglot. When Victor and Victoria have their wedding rehearsals, Victor stumbles over his words and can’t say his vows properly. Victor then decides to run away far into the woods to practise his vows but in doing so Victor *accidentally* marries another women…a ‘corpse bride’ named Emily. Emily who is a ‘corpse bride’ belongs to another world, known as the ‘World of the Dead’.

As time passed by Victor and Emily get to know each other better. Emily loves Victor but Victor’s heart is still with Victoria and he wants to go back. Victoria’s parents have now found a replacement… Is Victor too late?

‘Corpse Bride’ is humorous movie which has good graphics and good film techniques. All in all I would rate this film a 8/10 and would recommend it to the ages 8 and up.

My Speech

June 4th, 2006 by jessc in Uncategorized · 1 Comment

*Dreams*

In your lifetime you would have spent about 6 years which is about 2100 days dreaming.

There are 4 stages of sleep each of these stages lasting for about 90-120 minutes.

The first stage of sleep is when you are in light sleep. This stage is accompanied by NREM-non-rapid eye movements, muscle relaxation, a lowered body temparature and a slowed down heart rate. By doing this your body is entering into deep sleep.

In the second stage of sleep it is also accompanied by NREM, a further drop in body temparature, the relaxation of the muscles and the body’s immune system goes to work to repair the days damage. In this stage you are completely asleep.

Stage 3, your still in NREM stage but this time in even more deeper sleep and your metabolic system is extremely slow.

In the forth stage of sleep your eyes move back and forth rapidly-this is known as REM-rapid eye movements sleep. This comes in about 90-100 minutes of falling asleep. In this stage your blood pressure rises your heart rate speeds up and your brain activity increases. This is the stage where most of your dreaming occurs.

These 4 stages repeat themselves throughout an nights sleep.

Dreams date back to 3000-4000BC. Back in the greek and roman era dreams where seen as messages from the Gods. Temples called Asclepioions were built, it was believed that if sick peaople slept in these temples that they would be sent cures through their dreams.

During the middle ages dreams were seen evil and any images shown was believed to be temptations from the devil.

Did you know that there are 8 types of dreams? They are:

  • Daydreams: Occuring when you are awake and letting your imagination carry you away.
  • Lucid Dreams: Occuring when you realise that you are actually dreaming.
  • Nightmares: A frightening dream which causes the dreamer to wake up frightened.
  • Recurring Dreams: These are dreams which have very little variation to the story or theme.
  • Healing Dreams: These type of dreams can tell us if there is somthing wrong with our bodies even before the syptoms start showing.
  • Propetic Dreams: Also known as ’physic dreams’-These dreams can tell us the future.
  • Signal Dreams: These dreams help us solve problems and make decisions, and last but not least….
  • Epic Dreams: This type of dream remain with you for years!!

Have you ever asked yourself why do we dream? Well the answer to this question is just simply: we dream because while we are asleep our body repairs itself and we then go through different changes this can then cause to dream.

What do dreams mean…do they even have a meaning? Dreams can mean many different things, depending on what we see in our dreams - for example: what colour, what season what month, which animal etc. For example if you saw turqoise in your dream it could mean you will have plenty of new opportunities in the future or it could be a sign of good luck!

Did you know about 5 minutes after your dream has finished about half of the content is forgotten?, and after 10 minutes 90% is lost??…….

*Sweet Dreams!*

Speech…

June 2nd, 2006 by jessc in Uncategorized · No Comments

It was speech time yet again…

As soon as I heard Ms Raynor saying to the class that we had to do a speech I felt as if my heart suddenly stopped working. I hated giving speeches!- But I knew I had to present my speech to the class whether I liked it or not (unless of course I wanted a zero.)

At first it took me a while to figure out what I was going to talk about, it wasn’t until the next week that finally found the right topic…*dreams*.

Soon after I had finished writing and rehearsed my speech the day that I dreaded came…Waiting and waiting as my classmates presented their speeches one by one for Ms Ranor to call out my name, it wasn’t until about half way through the lesson when I then decided that I should volunteer and get the speech and the nervous feeling out of the way.

As I stood in front of my class presenting my speech I felt shacky and very nervous but when I got about a quater of the way through I started to cool down and my shackyness started to fade away.

Finally, the presentation of my speech was over..(for this year anyway) however I still have next years and the years after that to do-but one day, just one day (waiting…) all the speeches will be over. (yay!!)

Chocolate

April 16th, 2006 by jessc in Uncategorized · 2 Comments

Chocolate is good for you because:

Many people around the world have eaten and tasted chocolate before - and many people say it is bad for you but that is not all entirely true! Here are the reasons why:

*It contains Antioxidants which are good for you because it helps neutralise some of the harmful chemical reactions that occur in our metabolism.

*It soothes your brain and makes you feel good - and increases the levels of several chemicals(mood changes).

*It also melts in your mouth at body temparature giving you that smooth, soft and scrumptious texture which also does help soothe your brain and lifts your mood.

*It provides energy!

Chocolate is bad for you because:

Athough chocolate is not all good for you and there are still are some cons about it, it is still healthy to consume it once in a while…

*It is bad for you because it contains small amounts of caffeine slowly leading to addiction.

*It contains calories.

*It could lead to acne.

*It contains alot of sugar.

*It can cause or lead to tooth decay.

The Bad Beginning…

April 12th, 2006 by jessc in Uncategorized · No Comments

Ever since loosing their parents in a fire while playing at the beach, life has been very unfortunate for the Baudelaire children: Violet- the eldest is 14 and loves inventing, Klaus- the middle child who is abit older and then 12 wears glasses and likes to examine creatures which live in rock pools and Sunny the yougest out of the three likes to bite hard objects.

The lost of their parents have lead them to have to live with one of their ‘evil’ relatives, Count Olaf. He is an evil, selfminded man who has a job as an actor for plays and does not treat the children fairly. Count Olaf also has very high expectations of the children and makes them wory very hard.

Throughout the story, Count Olaf comes up with ‘evil’ plans to take away the Baudelaire childrens fortune, given to them by their parents (which Violet is only allowed to claim when she is older).

Using his evil mind, Count Olaf comes up with a plan that was to let the Baudelaire children participate in one of his plays ‘The Marvelous Marriage’. This was a play thata play that Klaus figured out that this was actually going to be a real marriage, allowing Count Olaf to have legal claim over their fortune.

Although Voilet had refused, Count Olaf had slyly taken Sunny away and locked her up in a cage that hung from the forbidden tower - which neither Klaus or Violet had access to, therefore forcing Violet to accept his hand in marriage in the play.

However, luckily Violet didnt sign with her proper hand- saving the Bauldelaire Children’s Fortune….

This book was very interesting with a very exciting plot which twists and turns as it goes. It was a fun and easy book to read and I recommend this book to people of all ages.
